How to Install Elgg on CentOS 7
Elgg is an open source social networking platform that allows users to create and manage their own social networks. It is a powerful and versatile platform that allows users to create and manage their own social networks, blogs, and other online communities. Elgg is written in PHP and uses MySQL as its database. It is a great choice for those looking to create their own social network or online community. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Elgg on a CentOS 7 server.
Prerequisites
Before you begin with this guide, you should have a separate, non-root user account with sudo privileges set up on your server. You can learn how to set up a user account by following our initial server setup guide for CentOS 7.
You will also need to install Apache, PHP, and MySQL on your server. You can do this by following our guide on how to install LAMP stack on CentOS 7.
Step 1 — Downloading Elgg
The first step is to download the latest version of Elgg. You can find the latest version of Elgg on the official Elgg website. At the time of writing, the latest version is Elgg 2.3.8.
To download Elgg, use the wget command to download the tarball from the Elgg website. Make sure to replace the version number with the latest version available:
wget https://elgg.org/download/elgg-2.3.8.tar.gz
Once the download is complete, extract the tarball using the tar command:
tar xzvf elgg-2.3.8.tar.gz
This will extract the contents of the tarball into a directory called elgg-2.3.8.
Step 2 — Configuring Apache
Now that Elgg is downloaded, we need to configure Apache to serve Elgg.
First, create a new Apache configuration file for Elgg. We will call this file elgg.conf:
sudo nano /etc/httpd/conf.d/elgg.conf
Add the following lines to the file. Be sure to replace example.com with your domain name:
Save and close the file when you are finished.
Next, enable the Apache rewrite module with the following command:
Enter your MySQL root password when prompted.
Once you are logged in, create a database for Elgg with the following command:
CREATE DATABASE elgg;
Next, create a new MySQL user and grant them privileges to the database we just created. Replace elgguser and password with a username and password of your choice:
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON elgg.* TO ‘elgguser’@’localhost’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘password’;
Step 4 — Installing Elgg
Now that Apache and MySQL are configured, we can install Elgg.
First, move the Elgg directory to the Apache document root directory:
sudo mv elgg-2.3.8 /var/www/html/
Next, give the Apache user ownership of the Elgg directory:
sudo chown -R apache:apache /var/www/html/elgg-2.3.8
Now, open your web browser and navigate to http://example.com/elgg-2.3.8. You should see the Elgg installation page.
Enter the database information you created in Step 3. When you are finished, click the Install button.
Elgg will now be installed. Once the installation is complete, you will be presented with the Elgg administration page.
